THE DOWNTOWN DETROIT PARTNERSHIP CARES FOR + MANAGES FOR OUR DOWNTOWN DETROIT PARKS
Since 2000, the Downtown Detroit Partnership in collaboration with the city of Detroit has been the recognized leader in creating, programming and managing downtown Detroit’s historic and transformational public spaces and urban parks.
Downtown Detroit Parks, which now includes six beautiful, active public spaces, started with Campus Martius Park. The process began in 1999 under Mayor Dennis Archer who set out to create the best public space in the world. Led by the Detroit 300 Conservancy, a 19-member task force, including key business leaders and stakeholders, residents, civic leaders and representatives from the Detroit City Council, Parks and Recreation Department, the Greater Downtown Partnership and Detroit Downtown Development Authority, the planning, design, construction and completion of Campus Martius Park was realized and the Park celebrated its Grand Opening on November 19, 2004.
When the park was founded, the Detroit 300 Conservancy, a private, 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit organization was responsible for its funding, management, programming and operation. In 2009, the Conservancy became a subsidiary of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, an enterprise of corporate, civic and philanthropic leaders that supports, advocates and develops programs and initiatives designed to create a clean, safe, and inviting Downtown Detroit.
While each park has its own unique amenities and identity, all provide a beautiful and serene environment for businesses, employees and residents to enjoy daily. Placemaking initiatives activate these public spaces attracting over 2 million visitors annually, in alignment with Downtown Detroit Partnership’s efforts to enhance Downtown neighborhoods.
Downtown Detroit Parks operates through private funding secured by Downtown Detroit Partnership, which provides support, public safety and special event services. This combined effort enables the Parks to provide a wide array of features and programming throughout the year.
